When I positioned myself along this outcropping of Miguelito Shale it was about 20 minutes before sunset. Realizing that the sun was going to be setting off to the top right of the frame and I was out of room to my left, I had to be sure to have strong visual interest in the bottom left of the frame to counterbalance the scene (the sun carries so much visual weight). Think of placing a X on top of this composition. I knew I needed a good wave crashing (fortunately we had a good swell) and then the final touch was the warm reflection of the wet shale! Now the composition worked - CLICK! PHEW!!! In all honesty, I wasn't sure if I was going to pull it off. Gotta love it when it all comes together... Montano de Oro State Park, Los Osos, California.
