Orange Algae, Point Lobos Reserve

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 9 May 2024 in Landscape & Rural.

On the northern point of Point Lobos State Reserve one will find this orange algae growing on the Cypress trees and rocks. The orange, velvety-looking growth is actually a green algae named Trentepohlia. Its orange color comes from carotene, a pigment which also occurs in carrots (what's ump doc?). The color contrast against the blue-water coves is beautiful.
