Too Close for Comfort, Lightning, Grand Canyon

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 9 August 2019 in Landscape & Rural.

Was out on a point along the north rim of the Grand Canyon with 4 workshop students when we saw lightning yesterday evening. I started counting and listened for thunder. Five seconds equals one mile. I didn't even reach 3 when the thunder roared, the cell had moved to within 1/2 mile of our position. We retreated back to the lodge and within minutes got this image of a bolt hitting Ova Point, 1/8th mile from where we had been standing.
