Kilauea Lava Fountains, Pahoa, Hawaii

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 30 May 2018 in Landscape & Rural.

My son Aaron and I arrived on the Big Island of Hawaii yesterday. We were able to find this vantage point to shoot two fountains of lava just after sunset last night. The trees in the foreground are Albizia and are estimated to be 60 feet tall. Volcanologists were estimating the main fountain was peaking at 200 feet. What an incredible site to see. The VOG (volcanic smog) is causing my eyes to water and there is a constant stench of sulfuric acid in the air. Air quality in Kona was very bad when we landed at 11am local time. The trade winds were not blowing. It's a very surreal sight.
