Highway 1 Big Sur Update

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 26 May 2017 in Landscape & Rural.

BIG SUR HWY 1 UPDATE: The massive mud slide on Highway 1 is at Mud Creek, which is located about 20 miles north of San Simeon on the far southern edge of the Pacific Coast Highway. Latest estimates are up to a year to reopen. Highway 1 is closed from Ragged Point to Gorda. The new Pfeiffer Bridge should be completed by late-September. This is located just south of Big Sur State Park and Highway 1 is accessible to .5 miles south of that point from Monterey. Highway 1 - The Pacific Coast Highway - is a 90-mile stretching from Carmel to the north to Cambria to the south. NOTE: For those of you who know the area well, the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge is 1.1 miles south of Sycamore Canyon Road, which leads to Pfeiffer Beach and popular Keystone Arch. Currently Pfeiffer Beach is closed due to flooding and road damage. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (McWay Fall) is also closed until further notice.

Both my upcoming Winter Big Sur Workshop and Spring Big Sur Workshop will not be affected by either of the closures!
