Note: This is a continuation of a 10-part series where I explore visual concepts that can help you while in the field. These concepts are not intended to be a how-to guide; rather, they are ways of helping one think about the visual craft of landscape photography.

Welcome to Part 3 of Exploring Visual Concepts. People may find it rather odd that I place the importance of subject number three on my list when it comes to photographing nature. It's fairly rare that I go out seeking a particular subject. If you have been following my series, you know that I go out seeking great light and color, then I find something in the landscape to go with it - a simple way of thinking perhaps - but one that has been successful for me.

Yet there are times that I do go out with a particular subject in mind. I hope to find great light and color but that is not always the case. With today's image of Arches National Park's Delicate Arch (the grandaddy of all arches), I went out with one goal in mind - get a rising moon coming up over the famed arch. To read more about how this image came together, please read my latest blog post Exploring Visual Concepts - Subject.
