Ice

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 1 March 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

I really took some articstic license in creating this image. While photographing along the bank of Yosemite's Merced River, I spotted a sheet of ice and began experimenting with nature's patterns. The lines, though somewhat concentric near the edges, merge into a more parallel pattern as they near the center of the frame reducing the visual tension and helping fuse the image. Also, the tones are accentuated by the highlights in the ridges of the ice in the top left-half of the frame which pulls the eye in an opposite diagonal from that formed by the lines.

Once in Photoshop, the experimentation continued. I won't bore you with all the steps involved (and I'd probably forget a couple anyway), but suffice it to say it was wild ride that usually leads to disaster. For once, I kind of like it. Would love to hear what you think.
