Santa Ana Road

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 15 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

One of the simple pleasures in my life is to grab my camera and tripod and just take a ride in the country to see what I can see! No expectations, no deadlines, no stress; just me, my camera and the beauty of nature around me. I'm blessed to live in an area of California where I can be transported to such a place within a 10-minute drive from my home. Such was the case with this scene on Santa Ana Road. Following this road east takes one through the oak-lined rolling hills of the Diablo Range. I followed the road to a dead-end (locked gate) and as I turned around and started driving west, I found myself looking into a beautiful setting sun. This image was made from a low perspective on the road. I like the way the road curved, then dipped into this awesome sky. Knowing my sensor could not capture the entire range of tones, I bracketed 7 exposures in one-stop intervals using my shutter. I then combined those 7 frames into an HDR image with Photomatix Pro 3.1 software. I polished off the image with the help of Photoshop and Nik Viveza software.
