Springtime Along the Central Coast

Posted by
Don Smith (California, United States) on 1 April 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

After a heavy winter of rains, central California's hillsides are now diplaying some beautiful fields of flowers and green grasses. Such was the case with the Santa Lucia range along the Big Sur coast. This is a simple image that works because of the colorful foreground provided by these golden poppies. I used a 16-35mmL lens and a low perspective to capture this image. My potential problems were wind and a brightly lit ocean, which I overcame by bumping up the ISO allowing for a faster shutter speed and by placing a 3-stop split neutral density filter over my lens which held back light on the water thus helping balance the image. I feel every shot has at least one (sometimes more) "potential problems." Determining what they are and overcoming them prior to recording the image helps you become a better photographer.
