Clearing Storm Rainbow

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 9 March 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

California has finally received some much needed rain this past week, and the departing storms always make for great rainbow opportunities. I went out one day with this intent in mind and was not disappointed. Rainbows will appear when enough moisture is in the air to allow for diffraction. The sun must be directly behind you and at an angle of 42 degrees from your shooting position. I definitely use a polarizer when shooting rainbows and try to add some interesting foreground feature when possible.

I want to thank all of you who have purchased a copy of my e-book: The Photographer's Guide to the Big Sur Coast. Sales have exceeded expectations and your comments are very much appreciated.
