The Morning After

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 27 February 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

A clearing overnight storm, which deposited 18 inches of new snow, revealed the iconic granite monolith of Yosemite's Half Dome. I've always loved photographing this non-native elm found in Cook's Meadow and this scene evoked memories of a favorite image of mine made by master photographer William Neill . Though the light was not as spectacular as Mr. Neill's, I nontheless loved the frame.

I tried various compositions but kept returning to this frame as my favorite. Most people come to Yosemite and make Half Dome their main subject; in this frame, it has been relegated to a secondary subject element. The patch of mist which formed just above the tree, dissapated rapidly, much to my chagrin. Sometimes, natures elements add the accent which moves the image from ordinary to extrodinary.
