Sunrise Light on Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 16 February 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

Having photographed on Death Valley's Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes the prior morning, our workshop group decided to take a different perspective on this overly photographed icon. Both Gary Hart and I spotted the potential for this image the prior morning after photographing Mosaic Canyon. As we pulled out of the parking lot, this image presented itself; we knew if we returned at first light (a clear morning was forecast) we could capture the golden hues that are present within the first couple minutes of sunrise.

This image is actually a crop from a 3-frame pano (I actually did a 7-frame pano but it would not display well for this blog). I created the pano in Photoshop CS4's Photomerge. Make sure you run the image through Auto-Blend. I have an article on my website that expalins the process in more detail.

Once cropped, I use Curves to enhance the contrast, and Hue/Saturation to bring out the golden tones (I really like CS4's Hue/Saturation for bringing out individual colors). A quick sharpen with Nik's Photo Sharpener Pro 3.0 finished off the image.
