Wolf MoonPosted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 16 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural. A full moon rises in January 2009 and appears 14 percent bigger in our sky and 30 percent brighter than other full moons. The moon orbits the earth every 29.5 days and is not a perfect circle. One portion is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to our planet than the farthest part, so the moon's apparent size (as seen in this image) changes. Also, when the moon is closer to the horizon, our brains perceive it as bigger (Ponzo Illusion) than when it is higher in the sky, when it reality it is not. Scientists don't fully understand what causes this but are leaning towards the idea that our brains use visual clues for depth perception and it really is nothing more than an optical illusion.
