Pacific Valley Sea Stacks

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 2 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

Just north of Big Sur's Jade Cove and Sand Dollar Beach lies a level stretch of land aptly named Pacific Valley. I have spotted these sea stacks in the past but have never been able to put them together with an interesting sky. All that changed recently as a series of cold Pacific storms brought cloudy, rainy, and even snowy weather to the central California coast and the Santa Lucia Mountains. I captured this image about five minutes prior to sunset as I tried to time the explosion of the waves against this large stack. Cone Peak, elevation 5100 feet, was hidden by the clouds in the top right of this image. This Valley is open to visitors with no trespassing restricitions. On this particular evening, I was the only one there! To see more of my images and to get information on my upcoming Big Sur Workshops, please visit my website at http://www.donsmithphotography.com.
