Dusk at Pt. Sur

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 21 December 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This is one of my favorite locations along the famed Big Sur coast and works at both ends of the day. The Pt. Sur Light Station provides an interesting subject and on this particular evening, civil twilight lasted almost an hour past sunset. I used an 8-second exposure to "smooth out" the Pacific Ocean and I loved how the blue color of the water seemingly glowed. I had virtually no post production work on this image - this is how the RAW image looked except that I used the new gradualted neutral density filter in ACR 5.2 (new to Photoshop CS4) to balance the sky and water! Using an aperature of f/16 allowed for the rotating light to produce a starburst (may not show on this small blog post) which served as an accent to finish off the image. This is another location we will visit during both Big Sur Workshops in 2009. For more information, please visit my website at http://www.donsmithphotography.com and click on the Workshop tab.
