Crescent Moonrise and Half Dome

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 5 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

A crescent moon adds just the accent needed to set off a silhouette of the famed Yosemite icon Half Dome as a dawn sky starts to come alive with color in this image photographed from the Ahwahnee Meadow. The success of this image must be credited to my partner Gary Hart as his research and uncanny ability to predict time and location of a rising moon allowed 12 other workshop participants the opportunity to photograph the same scene. As we were driving through the Yosemite Valley on the way to this location, we could actually see the moon. By moving closer to Half Dome, we in essence, reset to moonrise! There was very little post-processing needed with this image. I did bring the color out by using the shade preset in Adobe Camera Raw, and cropped the image into more of a pano look. Armed with the knowledge that the moon moves .25 degrees per minute, I felt safe that I would get no movement with a somewhat long shutter and medium focal length lens.
