Moonrise Over Monterey Harbor

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 1 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

An October full moon rises over the harbor in Monterey, California. This image is actually an HDR of three images bracketed at 2-stop increments and combined using Photomatix Pro 3.1 software. I then replaced the HDR version of the moon with the correctly exposed version by doing a simple cut and paste, then using the Transform tool in PSCS3, I enlarged it just a hair to fully cover the unnatural looking HDR version. Next, I did some local enhancements using Nik Veviza, brought out the warmth I remembered in the sky by using PSCS3's Hue/Saturation (isolating on just the red in the sky), then removed the noise with Nik Dfine 2.0 software. Finally, I did some selective sharpening of the boats and the building using Nik Sharpener Pro 3.0. I am not a schill for Nik software, but I do love their products. I will be conducting two workshops in the Monterey/Big Sur area in 2009; one in March and another in August. Gary Hart will be assisting me and we will limit the class size to just 12 participants.
