Alpenglow on Mt. Tom

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 28 October 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

My friend and colleague Mike Hall and I were on a scouting trip north of Bishop, California looking for a pond I was hoping to photograph at sunrise. Thanks to some poor directions, we were unable to find it in time (when we did it was dry anyhow) so we decided to pull off the dirt road we were on and shoot the alpenglow which was bathing Mt. Tom and the eastern Sierra crest. I shot most of my images with desert scrub in the foreground, then while walking back to my truck, saw the potential for this image. I didn't think much about it at the time, in fact, I shot just one frame. I love leading lines and this just kept popping off the screen during the edit. A little help from Nik Viveza fine-tuned the final version.
