Into the Abyss

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 28 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This image is really the equivilant of a fine art "grab shot." I saw the potential (I loved how the trail seemingly dropped into the wall of fog) but at the time I captured a few frames, I didn't think much about it. My editing process always starts with tagging images with "potential" and moving them to a folder I title "SELECTS." I kept coming back to this image and finally tried an HDR version in Photmatix Pro 3.0. The software nailed the foreground but I thought the sky looked a bit overcooked. I went back to my selects and took a good sky exposure, tweaked it in Adobe Camera Raw, and blended it in via a layer mask in Photoshop. This image best represents how I remember the scene. I would love to hear your thoughts - did I succeed? This image was captured literally minutes before sunset. As always, I invite you to visit my website at http://www.donsmithphotography.com. You will find image galleries, workshop information (where I teach HDR imaging), how to articles, my book On the Edge and more. Please take a look when you get a chance.
