Summer Rain and Rose PetalsPosted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 10 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural. I know in many parts of the world, summer rain is a fact of life (hey, my wife grew up in Yorkshire, England). But when one lives in the coastal valleys of California, summer rain is about as rare as a January heat wave! For this soft feeling macro image of rose petals, I provided a bit of my own moisture with a simple spray bottle. This closeup was shot with (3) stacked extension tubes (12mm, 20mm and 36mm) attached to a Canon 100mm macro lens. Focusing is crucial and as you can tell, just the tips of the two petals are sharp. Obviously one needs a extremely calm day (I shot this about 15 minutes after sunset). Any slight hint of a breeze will cause mis-focus. Extreme macros are fun and can open up a whole new world of photographic possibilities. As always, I'd like to invite you to visit my website at http://www.donsmithphotography.com. You will find How-To Articles, Portfolios, and an electronic preview of my book On the Edge which I use as an instructional guide in my Workshops. The book can also be purchased directly from my website. My Website: "how to" articles, galleries, stock photos, and more... Software Discounts:
