A Night With the Ancients

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 5 August 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

While pulling images for an upcoming project, I came across this photograph I made last September in the White Mountains, 10,000-plus feet above the Owens Valley, California. I decided I wanted to try to light paint the ancient bristlecones with three of my fellow photographer/friends (Mike Hall, James Guillory and Gary Hart) in the Ancients Grove located on the western slope of the Schulman Grove. Some of these trees are over 5,000 years old! I won't go into detail here, but if you are interested in how this image was created, please read Light Painting the Ancients which is posted on my website. Suffice it to say, the experience may have superseded the success of the image; the evening in the Whites is a memory that will stay with me forever! I'm off this week in the high Sierra making new images and getting a little R&R. I may not get back to all your responses.
