Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 16 July 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

I guess the only good byproduct of all the California wildfires is the awesome sunsets we have been getting. Pt. Cabrillo Lighthouse is located about three miles north of the town of Mendocino along the northern California coast. I was really struggling with finding a composition and had done a complete 360 around this lighthouse. Curious tourists were also oblivious to what I was doing so I had to time my frames accordingly. This is an HDR image accomplished by batch processing 8 images in Photomatix Pro software. After tonemapping was applied, I reopened the image in Adobe Camera Raw as a TIFF (available in Photoshop CS3) and did some minor tweaks. I then opened the image in Photoshop and went to Filter>Distort>Lens Correction and corrected the vertical linear perspective of the lighthouse (my low perspective and wide-angle lens resulted in parallax distortion). Photomatix Pro is by far the best software I've found for dealing with High Dynamic Range images.
