Rhododendrons and Coastal Redwoods

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 26 June 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

Rhododendrons near peak bloom add color to this grove of old-growth coastal redwoods. This forest is located in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in northern California (located just south of Del Norte State Park). Harsh light earlier in the day made this scene unshootable; however, a blanket of fog rolled in off the Pacific and provided the soft light needed to capture this image in the late afternoon. I used a B+W circular polarizer to enhance the blooms and saturate the greens. If you are interested in shooting this area, and other similar locations, I will be teaching a workshop there next June.
