Sunset at Gold Bluffs Beach

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 22 June 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This is a pretty straight-forward sunset shot. My friend Mike and I were exploring a place called Fern Canyon located 8 miles off the 101 Highway in Humbolt County (northern California) and as we were starting to drive out along Gold Bluffs Beach, we noticed a small opening in the fog bank along the horizon. With 25 minutes to go until sunset, we decided to see if it would hold (earlier it had been completely fogged in). Sure enough, the fog bank held stationary, the sun slipped underneath, and with the help of a 3-stop Singh-Ray split neutral density filter, I captured this image. These were just two of the many logs that were lying around the beach and it made sense to use them as foreground elements. It was just luck that the sunset lined up with the river!
