Yaki Point Sunrise

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 10 June 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

My alarm went off at 3:00am so I could shower, pack and check out of my hotel at Tusayan and catch the first shuttle bus to Yaki Point at the Grand Canyon. The effort paid off as a couple of clouds drifted into my frame just as the sun crested. I used this dead snag as a foreground element to provide a sense of scale. It helps to remove any filters when shooting into the sun to reduce your chances of flare. The highly polished sensor and anti-aliasing filter add to flare problems that weren't as troublesome in the good old days of film, but careful and subtle movements with camera placement can minimize their affect.
