Dogwood Over Merced River

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 9 May 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

Fresh dogwood blooms are at their peak in Yosemite Valley. They can be photographed any number of interesting ways. With this image, I looked for a branch whose lines mimicked those created by the blurred motion of the water (Merced River) in the background. This was the most successful of the sequence I shot. This image was made with early morning, soft, indirect light to avoid any distracting hot spots. The entire range of tones recorded on my sensor allowing me to retain detail not only in the blossom, but also the water.
