Half Dome Reflection in Mirror Lake

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 3 May 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

Yosemite's Half Dome, bathed in sunset light, reflects in the calm waters of Mirror Lake. I used a Singh-Ray 5-stop, soft edged, split neutral density filter to help balance the exposure from highlight to shadow. Mountain light contrasts at sunrise/sunset on a clear day can vary by as much as 7-stops of light (more if snow is on the peaks). Split grads are a great way to control contrast and balance tones within an image. I captured this image while co-teaching a Yosemite workshop with Gary Hart.
