Don - I see that this is taken at f/8. Is it easier to autofocus this way, or is it preferable for hockey images to have the crowd sharp as well?

Hi Ivan, I'm at f/8 because I am hooked into a strobe system. It consists of (8) 2400WS Speedotron packs and quad heads which sit in the rafters. Everything is triggered with Pocket Wizard remotes. Check the ISO - I'm at 200! Ambient only readings would be around ISO 800, 1/500th at 2.8. I am at a sync speed of 1/200th. It is the strobes that freeze the action!

Hi Ivan,
One other reason I use f/8 is that I am shooting with the Canon 100-400mmL lens. I've tried it at f/5.6 and it is not as sharp as f/8. I actually use this lens a lot with landscape photography at f/11 and higher and have much success!

Don -
I see. Thanks for the explanation. I actually like to see the crowd watching as well, which is hard to achieve at f/2.8 or so. I also imagine strobes wouldn't sync past 1/200, since you're on Canon?
Either way, can't wait for the game tomorrow, and we'll see you at the arena!
