Big Sur Fog and Headlands

Posted by Don Smith (California, United States) on 3 March 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

I made this image last Friday while spending a morning with my friend and fellow photographer Mike Hall at Big Sur. I'm blessed to live within a short drive of this spectacular coastline and was actually on a scouting trip for a workshop I am teaching there starting this Thursday - Sunday. Our intent was to shoot a sunrise (actually shafts of light breaking through the Santa Lucia Mountains) but instead we encountered summer-like fog. We immediately drove south along Highway 1 towards Nepenthe (elevation 800ft.) and photographed this scene from the parking lot. This particular image was made about an hour after sunrise looking south down the headlands. It was awesome how the Monterey pines stuck their noses through the soupy mist. Literally minutes later the fog rose and enveloped us and the show was over. It was a great morning and I will be posting more in the days ahead. http://www.donsmithphotography.com
